The current study aims to explore the relationship between the sense of coherence(SOC), vicarious trauma, and the mental health of human service workers. Based on the salutogenic model, this study investigates the path of how SOC impacts on mental health through vicarious trauma. The surveys were conducted on 358 workers involved in human services agencies. The participants of the current study included 161 child and youth counselors, 158 child protective service workers, and 39 psychiatrists. Structural equation modeling was utilized as the main statistical method. The results of the study show that the SOC of the participating workers had a direct impact on their mental health problems even after adjusting for agency types, the level of supervision that they received, and their career service lengths. In addition, the SOC of the workers also had an indirect impact on their mental health problems through vicarious trauma. It is concluded that SOC alleviates mental health problems not only directly but also indirectly through reducing vicarious trauma. Based on these result, practice implications for the mental health of human service workers were discussed.
